Strategy Focused Digital Reading Responses Perfect for Distance Learning & Why You Should Be Using Them

It’s crazy to think how much the standard classroom model has shifted and changed in such a short time. The need for effective Distance Learning & Digital Classroom resources has never been greater! My Strategy Focused Response pages originated as a bookmark students would use each week alongside their Literature Circle assigned reading. Each week, students would receive a new reading assignment and a new bookmark filled with strategy focused activities to complete while they read the newly assigned chapters. I quickly realized the effectiveness of this model, and with the shift to Distance Learning & Google Classroom Friendly resources, I adapted the bookmarks to a single, Strategy Focused Digital Reading Response.

****If You would like to learn more about the Bookmark Model I used, CLICK HERE. Student Digital Responses are included in the Bookmark Downloads, FREE Download | Sample Available.

These Strategy Focused Student Response pages are so extremely accommodating, their application and potential in the classroom go far beyond Literature Circles where they originated.

Benefits Behind the Digital Response Pages:

  • These activities can be used with any text. Specifically fiction, novels, and digital reading passages. This allows you to use them again and again. Based on the text assigned you can easily differentiate amongst your students and apply rigor. You can also use them to go completely digital and assign Digital Reading Passages for students to respond to.
  • These activities are editable through Google Drive. You can easily and quickly edit the text to your classroom’s needs, or alter the text to include more text-specific questions. The Active Reading Strategies are also editable in a way that you can completely customize the activities by moving different sections in and out of the response area.
  • Use hard copies in the classroom, or assign the Digital Version Student Response pages in Google Classroom. Whether you start in the classroom, as a hybrid model, or distance learning classroom, you won’t skip a beat moving from one type of learning to the other. These pages are made to accommodate your unique needs as a teacher.
  • By focusing student’s reading assignments on a single strategy you simplify your planning. Teach a whole class mini-lesson on the strategy of the week, practice together, then allow students to work independently with an appropriate text as they demonstrate the modeled strategy. This simplifies your planning 10 fold, while still allowing you to differentiate to your student’s needs.
  • By focusing on a single strategy classroom discussions can be united and depth from different texts is added. No matter what text you are using, as long as the strategy is the same, students can connect, relate, and give great insight to a strategy that may have been one dimensional by only using a whole-class text.
  • By focusing on a single strategy students go beyond and go deeper than the typical reading comprehension quiz at the end of a comprehensive digital reading passage.
  • By focusing on a single strategy you are able to more easily pinpoint and assess your student’s needs. Rather than assigning an all strategy based comprehensive quiz at the end of a reading passage.
  • The use and application of these pages are endless. Use these anywhere there is some type of reading assignment. Think ELA integration with History, Social Studies, or even use the Active Reading Strategies in Science. Use these as a Guided Reading lesson, Literacy Station Rotations, Whole-Class Novels, Classroom Book Clubs, or how they originated in weekly Literature Circle Assignments.
  • Printable| Editable Version Student Response Included. Decide to go the hard copy route? No problem, a print and go version of the product is included. Best part, I’ve sized it to work perfectly as a glue in with interactive notebooks!
  • This product is flexible across a large span of grade levels. Because it is text-dependent it can be used and implemented in grades as young as elementary looking to study chapter books or novels, to your middle school upper grades and High School Students. The rigor of the text creates the rigor of the assignment.

How to use in a Digital Learning Classroom:

I would begin each Strategy Focused Reading Response with a Mini-Lesson based on the strategy you will be assigning with the reading. Introducing the strategy for the week can be done easily over Zoom, Google Meet, or Screen Castify. Do this live with your class and save the recording to google classroom, or simply do a pre-recorded video for students to watch on their own time.

Example of Making Connection Response: Each Active Reading Response has moveable activities & Strategy Focused Questions

I teach the mini-lessons using a (To, With, By Model.) Model the mini-lesson of the strategy to the students. Let’s say your strategy for the week is the Active Reading Strategy: Making Predictions. Begin by introducing what making predictions is, then Modeling it using a picture book or short passage TO the students. Making sure you are explaining your thinking and reasoning aloud as they simply observe. Next, do a similar lesson WITH the students. This time they interact and ask questions as you complete the remainder of the passage or book all while making predictions and modeling your thinking as you go. At the end of the mini-lesson, students will be prepared to Make Predictions BY themselves as they work on the assigned reading and assigned Making Predictions Strategy Focused Digital Response on their own.

This is the model I would use weekly. Students then have the week to complete their assigned reading, and the strategy focused reading response. At the start of the next week, you will introduce a new strategy, explicitly teach it, and students will focus on that single strategy while they complete their reading for the week. This simple pattern will GREATLY reduce your stress and planning, as well as student anxiety all while increasing the effectiveness of your lessons and student’s reading comprehension!

Example of Setting: Element of Fiction Student Response. Each Response has an Element based Anchor Chart & Activities

You can go completely digital by assigning the differentiated reading passages or assignments through sites like Epic, Common Lit, Read Works, Newsela, or Freckle, or give students a hard copy of a novel and assign different chapters each week. Each week students will focus on perfecting a single strategy, reading skill, or element of fiction while they read!

Because the entire class is focused on the same strategy, having students respond to a strategy focused question, or having a group discussion can be really rewarding. Despite everyone using different texts, their response will be focused and just as meaningful to a student not reading the same text. Use the Digital Versions of the accompanying Roll and Respond Sheets to have students respond at the end of their reading assignment using digital tools like FlipGrid, Screen Castify, Zoom, or Google Meet! Click Here to Learn More about the Roll & Respond Pages and “How to Keep Students Focused and Accountable During Group Book Discussions.” Every Strategy Focused Digital Response Page has a corresponding Strategy Focused Roll & Respond Discussion Question Activity!

Looking for an activity that’s SURE to bring the spirit of Elijah into your heart while you study Doctrine and Covenants Section 2 for #comefollowme this week. I’ve got two @familysearch activities guaranteed to make your heart swell, both take less than 30 seconds, and absolutely no family history know how is required. Trust me, I’m as novice as they come.
-
The first activity requires you to upload a picture of yourself, it will then calculate who you look like the most in your family tree! Sarah Mae Eden was a consistent front runner in my results, which sharing the same middle name Mae, felt extra serendipitous.
-
Head to this week’s blog post for the second @familysearch activity idea and more details! Comment below who you look the most like, or tag a friend💛

I was so excited when I saw @angiemaek had released a new song. (Composer of My Own Sacred Grove) I was even MORE excited when I realized it was about Family History, then I was the MOST excited when I realized this week’s Come Follow Me focused on Elijah’s promise to turn their hearts to their fathers 💛
-
Head to this week’s blog post to listen! Thank you again @angiemaek for sharing your talents with us. Absolutely beautiful 💛
...

This isn’t the first time this has happened. In fact, as I look back I can think of a handful of times where something similar has happened, in relation to preparing these posts or hoping they will come together.

You see, I’ve been praying, sometimes as a formal prayer, but mostly a plea from the depths of my heart, that Heavenly Father would help me to figure out how to make these weekly posts work. Because genuinely, I WANT to do them. They are good for my soul. However, putting these posts together takes a lot of sacrifice in the sense of time and dedicated thought, which as a mother with 3 young children, and a business on the side, time and dedicated thought are two of my most precious and rare resources....

Did you catch this week’s free printables and activities for Come Follow Me?! This coloring page of Joseph Smith and Emma, melts my heart.
-
Side Note: Who has used @familysearch Famous Relative app? It’s the PERFECT family activity for this week with the focus being on #familyhistory
You may be asking what this little side note has to do with this coloring page... well through the #familysearch I found I’m related to BOTH Joesph and Emma!
Head to this week’s blog post for more information and a link to the activity, then comment below with a famous relative In YOUR family tree!

Did anyone else see @latterdayfamily suggestion for recreating the first vision using rocks! Such a fun and creative idea💛 She used Canvas, making it a durable piece of art that can be displayed for the year. Absolutely LOVED this idea.

If Joseph Smith’s transcendent experience in the Sacred Grove teaches us anything, it is that the heavens are open and that God speaks to His children. The Prophet Joseph Smith set a pattern for us to follow in resolving our questions. Drawn to the promise of James that if we lack wisdom we may ask of God, the boy Joseph took his question directly to Heavenly Father. He sought personal revelation, and his seeking opened this last dispensation.”

“In like manner, what will your seeking open for you? What wisdom do you lack? What do you feel an urgent need to know or understand? Follow the example of the Prophet Joseph. Find a quiet place where you can regularly go. Humble yourself before God. Pour out your heart to your Heavenly Father. Turn to Him for answers and for comfort” (Ensign, May 2018).

-President Russel M. Nelson
...

Did anyone else wonder if reading the Doctrine and Covenants would be as relatable and comparable to reading the Book of Mormon last year in relations to the state of the world....
-
And then you read about Joseph Smith’s experience....
✅Chaos
✅Differences of Opinions
✅Not knowing what’s truth
✅People that should have been his friend treating him unkindly because of beliefs.....
If there has ever been a time in my life where I’ve so desperately yearned to know what is truth and what is not, it would be now. Grateful for the restored gospel.

It was just me & the kiddos last Saturday. I had put off a lot of projects over Christmas break & was hoping to dedicate the majority of that day to getting caught up. After my kids had finished a movie I decided the next “keep em happy” activity would be a bath w/ one of their new bath bombs. As I worked I asked the kids to pick out a bath bomb & toys they would like to play with as they tubbed. The kids grew impatient as I struggled to pull myself away from the computer. Time passed & baby Grace woke up fixed on a feeding. Benson & Lovie got antsy realizing it would be even longer before I could start their tubs. I assured them I’d help as soon as sis was done & reminded them to find their bath time tools they had previously picked out. At some point between the picking out & waiting for mom, Benson had lost his bath bomb. The anxiety filled him as the reality of the disappearance of his bath bomb set in. Desperately he began to search as I helplessly sat in the chair nursing Grace. After a valiant effort he returned to no avail. I told him to say a prayer, & try again which he quickly, humbly & obediently did. Again, another valiant effort of searching commenced. This time I offered my own silent pleading that Heavenly Father would answer his prayers & that Benson would be able to find it on his own, without my interference. Benson returned to the living room deflated and defeated. Still no sign. He sat on the ground, & began to complain & look for something else to fill his attention. At this point I told him something to the effect that Heavenly Father cares about what you care about, so if finding this bath bomb is important to you, it’s important to him... “however,” & I quote, “you have to do the work, it (the bath bomb) won’t just fall from the sky.” Inspired once again, Benson stood up & got to work. Lovie offering a sweet vocal prayer of encouragement behind him, they were off. Not moments later Benson was again at the Christmas Tree, a place he had looked again, & again, & again. This time his small wooden rocker he intended to use as a stool bumped the tree, and would you believe it... thud. The missing bath bomb literally fell from the sky. ...

Each year our family gives a favorite Christmas book to some of our loved ones. (I wish I was able to get my hands on more of them!😭) With the passing of author Tomie dePaola, it seemed appropriate to give one of his. Reading this book, THIS year, made me cry. I struggled to make it through as it highlighted my weaknesses and put into words what I've been trying to set aside and not deal with. Last year I had great intentions of celebrating a more Christ centered Christmas, December arrived and again my intentions remained only that. Reading this story struck a cord in my soul. I'm old Befana. There may only be a few days left until Christmas, but I'm going to be intentional with them. On that note, I'll be taking a break from social and working to reground myself with the foundation that matters, and refocus my attention on Him. Love you all, MERRY CHRISTMAS!

This is SO GREAT!! Head to @figlittles to download a COMBINED (Come Follow Me/Light the World) Calendar! Thanks so much Ali, this is GENIUS💛💛💛
.
.
@figlittles post:

If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed (like me!!) with all the fun advents, traditions, count-downs, and to-do’s I’ve got something you might like.

I decided rather than pumping out a slew of unique content for the December PlayGuide, I’d put together a simple calendar that combines Come Follow Me lessons with the church’s Light The World (LTW) campaign! These calendar templates have the original prompts from Light The World, but I’ve done the work for you and picked a scripture and discussion prompt that perfectly accompanied the LTW theme for that day. It is PRETTY genius if I do say so myself! 🎉

I hope this is useful and helps you simplify this season instead of piling on more!

It’s only December 2...but is anyone else feeling the holiday craziness already too?! Do you think this year is more or less busy than other non-Covid holidays? 🤷🏼‍♀️ vote with a 🎄 for MORE busy and a ☃️ for LESS busy!

I'm grateful for refinement. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to be a little better everyday. Though my growth pattern is for every step forward there's a few steps back, somehow, over time, minuscule little by minute little, there's been progress. Though I don't see it in the day to day, I do see it in the years gone by and though it is slow, and the curve to my chart is gradual, it's there. I know this is due to Christ’s enabling Grace, available through His atonement. I don't think I'll ever quite have the words, the comprehension, or the understanding to adequately express my gratitude for this.

Art by one of my very favorites Emily Shay
.
.
.
Had to share Emily’s words when she debuted this piece, ”The Refiner’s Fire.”
.
”...And yet, considering a piece of rough ore- a rock encased with minerals naturally contains impurities. However with those impurities, it also carries within it precious metals such as silver and gold. For the refiner to create something out of that piece of ore, he needs to begin the refining process by breaking the ore with a heavy hammer. The ore then must be exposed to the refiner’s fire, with temperatures as high as 900-1000 degrees Celsius, in order to burn away the impurities and reveal the precious metal inside.
...
Could there be a gold and silver lining to the trials we are experiencing? By clinging to hope, persevering in faith and trusting in the Master Refiner’s perfect plan, we are refined in the fire.

In this painting there are a few things I’d like to point out:
⁃ with the support of Jesus Christ and heaven raining down tender mercy to keep her from burning, she is safe, cool and unconsumed.
⁃ by accepting such love and support, this brings new growth – beautiful fiery growth.
⁃ Christ’s halo is made of all colors of the flame, as he takes on every and all the impurities.

“I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are my people,’ and they will say ‘The Lord is our God.’” Zech. 13:9”
.
(Continued in the comments)
...

“Hope is not knowledge, but rather the abiding trust that the Lord will fulfill His promise to us. It is confidence that if we live according to God’s laws and the words of His prophets now, we will receive desired blessings in the future. It is believing and expecting that our prayers will be answered. It is manifest in confidence, optimism, enthusiasm, and patient perseverance.” Dieter F. Uchtdorf ...
