Come Follow Me: Book of Mormon, Teaching Ideas and Free Resources

ALMA 30-31

QUESTIONS TO PONDER:

Each Come Follow Me Lesson asks important and reflective questions. When I first began my individual study these questions threw me off. Simply because many of these questions required so much depth and individual reflection in order to answer honestly. My first approach to come follow me was to get in, get out, get it done, check it off. These questions simply didn’t allow me to do so. In fact, I felt a little sick when I would read a question like, “How does the spirit speak to you?” and I wouldn’t know the answer right away. After a time, and pondering on that specific question I realized IT’S OKAY. In fact, I think these questions were meant to be set aside, thought about, and pondered. When we try and come up with the quick easy, obvious, answer, we are depriving ourselves of an opportunity to reflect, ponder, pray, and RECEIVE REVELATION. Is this not the whole reason for Come Follow Me? Are we not trying to finetune and recognize how we, and how to receive personal revelation.

So each week I will list out some of the questions issued in Come Follow Me. Maybe you pick to ponder about all of them, maybe you pick just one. Whatever you do, ponder on this for the ENTIRE week. Pray about it, discuss it with loved ones, then at the start of the new week, take the time to write down your impressions or thoughts, share them with your family, testify of powerful insights.

  • What “counterfeits [of] the true gospel” do you notice in today’s world? For example, Sister Julie B. Beck, former Relief Society General President, taught, “Any doctrine or principle [we] hear from the world that is antifamily is also anti-Christ”
  • Consider making a list of the false doctrines Korihor taught in Alma 30:6–31. What are some of the consequences of believing these teachings? For instance, what is the result of believing that “when a man [is] dead, that [is] the end thereof”? (Alma 30:18).
    • What false doctrines taught by Korihor are similar to false doctrines you’ve noticed in the world today?
  • What can you learn from Alma’s response to Korihor’s teachings? (see Alma 30:31–35).
  • What do you learn from Alma 31:5 about the power of God’s word?
    • How have you seen the word of God lead “people to do that which [is] just”? (Alma 31:5). Ponder how you can “try” (use or test) the word of God to help someone you love.
  • How do you feel you could be more like Alma?
  • Family members could share what they see that testifies of God. How do these things—or other experiences we’ve had—help us know God is real?
  • What do we learn from Alma 30:56–60 about how the devil treats his followers?
    • What can we do to protect our home against his influence?
  • After reading Alma 31:20–38 with your family, you could discuss the following questions: How was Alma’s prayer different from the prayer of the Zoramites?
    • How can we follow Alma’s example in our personal and family prayers?
  • What are we doing each day in our home to learn about and speak of God?

Lesson:

I’m so excited to get to Alma and Korihor! Here we find what I like to think is my FAVORITE scripture. This little verse packs a punch and really puts into words a very large part of my testimony. ALL things denote there is a God. This was even the verse I chose to share during the 2019 Light the World Campaign.

I was left completely in awe when I saw the work of artist and photographer: Alexey Kljatov. Kljatov specializes in macro photography. Read more about his process or see more of his work here.

One of the beautiful things about art is that the interpretation and feelings evoked for one person might be completely different and unique for the next. For me, I see God in these pictures. I see precision and geometry, and exactness. I do not see chance, or random happenstance. I see beauty, I see numbers, I see God’s Hand. God is in the details of our lives. It just takes the right lens to see Him sometimes.

Hearing His Voice

As I came across this week’s reading assignment, I was reminded of the talk, “Hearing His Voice,” by Elder David P. Homer. This was a talk I had previously taught in Relief Society. Often times when I teach I create a graphic organizer for the sisters to complete during the lesson, this helps my brain process how and what I hope to teach. If you would like to download the graphic organizer as well as my notes from this lesson click on the link below!

This talk goes along perfectly with this week’s lesson, and this page can make a perfect companion to your, or your student’s study. *** This FREE Download is exclusive to members of Living on Lemon Lane. In order to access the download, you must be logged in. Not a member? Teaching Ideas for Toddlers & Young Children

Watch or Listen To:

With a 2-year-old and 4-year-old, I understand the STRUGGLE and the attention span you are dealing with. Below are some of my favorite videos or audio recordings|podcasts you can listen to and watch with your children. My favorites right now are the Book of Mormon Story videos.**Different from the newly released B.O.M. videos. These are illustrated and READ stories to your children. THESE are PERFECT for when everyone is strapped in the car seat. My 4-year-old now requests these over the radio. Each segment is only 2-4 minutes long. This allows us to listen, review and discuss together, and listen again throughout the week.  Many of the videos I share can be found on the Saint’s Radio Channel App. (Formerly Mormon Channel App, If you don’t already have this, DOWNLOAD NOW.)

I am absolutely LOVING the YouTube Channel, Latter Day Kids. Each week they put out a beautifully illustrated video meant for young children to be used in conjunction with the Come Follow Me Lessons. This week’s video is all about All Things Denoting there is a God! You can even head to their website to download discussion questions to go along with the video and a fun coloring page.

Come Follow Me Suggestions:

  • Sing together a song about the scriptures, such as “Scripture Power” (music.ChurchofJesusChrist.org), and ask the children to listen for how the scriptures help us. Repeat the phrase “The word of God is more powerful than …” several times, and ask the children to help you complete the phrase.

Come Follow Me Suggestions:

  • Take a walk outside with the children or ask them to stand at a window as you read Alma 30:44. Ask them to point out things they see that help them know God is real. This week’s activity page can also help.

  • MAKE PRAYER ROCKS: After reading Alma 31:20–38 with your family, you could discuss the following questions: How was Alma’s prayer different from the prayer of the Zoramites? How can we follow Alma’s example in our personal and family prayers? Younger children could put a rock under their pillows to help them remember to pray every morning and night. They also might enjoy decorating their rock.

Prayer Rock:

Making a prayer rock is a great activity! This can be fun for the whole family and across a large span of ages. Essentially a prayer rock acts as a visual and sometimes physical reminder to prayer both morning and night. Making a prayer rock is as simple as finding a rock, cleaning it, letting it dry, and then decorating it! How you decorate it is completely up to you, think: bedazzle, modge podge, paint markers, or even sharpies! You can also give each rock a quick spray of clear acrylic to seal your piece!

Making a prayer rock is also a great activity for the youth, and works especially well as a virtual activity for primary, activity days, young women or young men! If we’re being totally honest I’d even enjoy this for Relief Society! If I were to do this as a virtual activity I would simply drop off the supplies and poem (See Free Download Below) and leave the rock finding and decorating up to the youth. Paint together during a zoom call, or do a zoom call to show and display their works of art.

To round out this activity I created this FREE Rock Prayer coloring page and printable. This is a FREE digital product. Feel free to add your own notes or edits, but remember this is for Personal Use Only. Feel free to point friends and family to the website membership if interested in sharing this download with a different household. *** This FREE Download is exclusive to members of Living on Lemon Lane. In order to access the download, you must be logged in. Not a member?  Read Alma 30:44 and talk about how God created this beautiful world for us. Then play this game to continue thinking about God’s creations.
  • Have each family member write the letters of the alphabet in a list down one side of a paper.

  • For two minutes, everyone should try to write a creation that begins with each letter. For example, you could write “Trees” for the letter T.

  • When time runs out, have everyone share their list.

Discussion: How do these blessings from God make you feel? What can we do to take care of God’s creations?
