Questions to Ponder:

When I first began my individual study… these questions threw me off. Simply because many of these questions required so much depth and individual reflection in order to answer honestly. My first approach to Come Follow Me was to get in, get out, get it done, check it off. These questions simply didn’t allow me to do so. In fact, I felt a little sick when I would read a question like, “How does the spirit speak to you?” and I wouldn’t know the answer right away. After a time, and pondering on that specific question I realized IT’S OKAY. In fact, I think these questions were meant to be set aside, thought about, and pondered. When we try and come up with the quick easy, obvious, answer, we are depriving ourselves of an opportunity to reflect, ponder, pray, and RECEIVE REVELATION. Is this not the whole reason for Come Follow Me? Are we not trying to finetune and recognize how we, and how to receive personal revelation. So each week I will list out some of the questions issued in Come Follow Me. Maybe you pick to ponder about all of them, maybe you pick just one. Whatever you do, ponder on this for the ENTIRE week. Pray about it, discuss it with loved ones, then at the start of the new week, take the time to write down your impressions or thoughts, share them with your family, testify of powerful insights. Each Come Follow Me Lesson asks important and reflective questions.

• How have you received “grace and assurance” to be able to “stand”? (Doctrine and Covenants 106:8).

• How can you “be more careful henceforth in observing your vows,” or covenants?

• As you read about the following priesthood offices, consider how you can uphold those serving in these callings by your “confidence, faith, and prayer[s]” (Doctrine and Covenants 107:22).
• What are you doing to more fully receive—and help others receive—those blessings?
• Adam wanted his posterity to be blessed by the priesthood. What promises did he receive? (see verses 42, 55). As you read about what Adam did, consider your own desires for your family to enjoy the blessings of the priesthood.
  • What are you inspired to do to help your family receive these blessings?
• What can our family do to cause “joy in heaven”?
• What are we doing to uphold our leaders “by … confidence, faith, and prayer”?
• The principles that guide the councils of the Church can also help us counsel together as a family. What principles in these verses can we apply to our family councils? (See M. Russell Ballard, “Family Councils,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2016, 63–65.)
• Why does the Lord need us to both learn our duties and do them with all diligence?
• How can we strengthen each other in our conversations? in our prayers? in our exhortations, or encouragement? in all our doings? You might choose one of these to work on as a family.

Activity Suggestion from Church Magazines

• • Sing “We Thank Thee, O God, for a Prophet” (Hymns, no. 19).

  • Jesus calls prophets, apostles, and others to lead the Church (see Doctrine and Covenants 107:21–26). We hear from some of these leaders at general conference!

  • While you listen to conference, use the activities on pages 24–25 to help you stay focused. Then write to the Friend to tell us what you liked most about general conference.

• For Doctrine and Covenants 106–108: Help your little ones say, “I can follow Church leaders.” Hold up a picture of the prophet. Talk about how your family can follow the prophet’s direction.

Activity Suggestions From Come Follow Me:

• • Give a family member written instructions for a household task, and invite him or her to choose how to do the task: diligently, slothfully, or without reading the instructions. Let the rest of the family watch him or her do the task and guess which approach the family member chose. Then let other family members have a turn. Why does the Lord need us to both learn our duties and do them with all diligence? (See Becky Craven, “Careful versus Casual,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2019, 9–11.)

  • Draw on the board a picture to represent “the heavens [being] opened unto [us]” (Doctrine and Covenants 107:19) because of the priesthood (such as light rays shining through a cloud). Give the children pictures representing blessings that come from the priesthood, such as baptism, the sacrament, and the temple. Invite them to share why they are thankful for the blessing in their picture, and let them put their picture in the light rays on the board. Bear testimony that we can have these blessings because Heavenly Father restored the priesthood.

  • Make a path on the floor, and give the children pictures of priesthood ordinances they will need so they can follow the path back to Heavenly Father (see Gospel Art Book, nos. 103–8, 119–20). Help the children put the ordinances in order on the path.

  • Draw a person on the board, and ask the children to name some things the person could do to become physically stronger. (You might draw bigger muscles on the person as the children name things.) Read Doctrine and Covenants 108:7, and ask the children to listen for ways we can “strengthen [our] brethren [and sisters].” Explain any words that might be difficult.

    • Help the children think of people they know who may need strengthening. What could we say to them or do for them? Work together to make cards for these people, or encourage the children to remember them in their personal and family prayers.

  • Invite the children to do something that requires careful attention to be successful, such as trying to fill a cup with water without spilling it over. What happens when we are not careful? Invite them to read Doctrine and Covenants 108:3 and discover what Lyman Sherman was asked to do carefully. List with the children the promises they make with Heavenly Father when they are baptized and partake of the sacrament. Help them think of ways they can be careful about observing these promises.
