Questions to Ponder:

When I first began my individual study… these questions threw me off. Simply because many of these questions required so much depth and individual reflection in order to answer honestly. My first approach to Come Follow Me was to get in, get out, get it done, check it off. These questions simply didn’t allow me to do so. In fact, I felt a little sick when I would read a question like, “How does the spirit speak to you?” and I wouldn’t know the answer right away. After a time, and pondering on that specific question I realized IT’S OKAY. In fact, I think these questions were meant to be set aside, thought about, and pondered. When we try and come up with the quick easy, obvious, answer, we are depriving ourselves of an opportunity to reflect, ponder, pray, and RECEIVE REVELATION. Is this not the whole reason for Come Follow Me? Are we not trying to finetune and recognize how we, and how to receive personal revelation. So each week I will list out some of the questions issued in Come Follow Me. Maybe you pick to ponder about all of them, maybe you pick just one. Whatever you do, ponder on this for the ENTIRE week. Pray about it, discuss it with loved ones, then at the start of the new week, take the time to write down your impressions or thoughts, share them with your family, testify of powerful insights. Each Come Follow Me Lesson asks important and reflective questions.

  • How is this revelation like an olive leaf, a traditional symbol of peace? (see also Genesis 8:11).
    • What truths in this section help you feel hope and peace in Christ?
  • As you ponder these verses, what are you inspired to do to “draw near” to God? (verse 63). Consider what the Lord’s command to “sanctify yourselves” might mean for you (verse 68).
  • Why might it be “expedient for you to understand” both doctrinal and temporal subjects? (verse 78). How are you following the counsel to “seek learning”? (verse 118). What do you think it means to learn “by study and also by faith”?
  • Consider noting prophecies about the Savior’s Second Coming in these verses. Why do you think the Lord would want you to know about these things?
  • Consider reading these verses with the temple in mind; what do you find here that could help you prepare to enter the Lord’s house?
  • What do we learn about the Resurrection from these verses? How might these truths influence the choices we make?
  • You could start a discussion on this verse by asking family members to talk about gifts they have been given—both those they received joyfully and others they did not. How can we show the Lord that we rejoice in the gift of celestial glory that He offers us?
    • How do we rejoice in “the giver of the gift”?
  • These verses contain some action words that might inspire you to think of creative ways to teach the messages in the verses to your children. For instance, you might play a hiding game to discuss the phrase “seek me diligently and ye shall find me” (verse 63; italics added).
  • As a family, identify some warning signs in and around your home, such as warning labels on medicines or traffic signs for drivers. How do these warnings help us? What does Heavenly Father want us to “warn [our] neighbor” about?
  • What can we do to make our home a “house of God”?

Lesson:

I LOVED this activity suggestion for Come Follow Me this week:

Doctrine and Covenants 88:119–26

“Establish … a house of God.”

The Lord’s instructions regarding the “house of God” can be a helpful guide for us as we build our lives and our homes.

Possible Activities

  • Invite the children to choose seven words that describe their home or another home they’ve visited. Then ask them to read Doctrine and Covenants 88:119 and find the seven words the Lord uses to describe His house. Help the children think of ways they can make their homes a “house of God.”

I found this activity page from the LDS Gospel Library and wanted to put my own spin on it to make it “fit” with the activity suggestion mentioned above 😀

I think the foldable turned out so lovely! To complete, simply print off a temple for each child. Then make a list of the 7 words that describe the temple. Write each word on each one of the 7 bricks of the temple.

Then read through the Doctrine and Covenants 88:119and find the 7 words the Lord uses to describe His house. Maybe add more words to the 7 bricks as you read.

Discuss why we would want our own homes to be like “His” home.

Next cut out the temple, fold on the dotted lines, and glue the tabs to assemble. Send these with your students or kiddos to display in their home to act as a reminder of what we can do to better make our own home like “His” home.

You will find some of your greatest joys in your efforts to make your home a place of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and a place that is permeated with love.

“Full enjoyment of the gift of the Holy Ghost includes receiving revelation and comfort … and being sanctified from sin and made fit for exaltation in the celestial kingdom” (True to the Faith: A Gospel Reference [2004], 83).

Teaching Ideas for Toddlers & Young Children

Watch or Listen To:

With young children, I understand the STRUGGLE and the attention span you are dealing with. Below are some of my favorite videos or audio recordings|podcasts you can listen to and watch with your children.  Many of these are PERFECT for when everyone is strapped in the car seat. My 5-year-old now requests many of these over the radio. This allows us to listen, review and discuss together, and listen again throughout the week.  Many of the videos I share can be found on the Saint’s Radio Channel App. (Formerly Mormon Channel App, If you don’t already have this, DOWNLOAD NOW.)

I am absolutely LOVING the YouTube Channel, Latter Day Kids. Each week they put out a beautifully illustrated video meant for young children to be used in conjunction with the Come Follow Me Lessons.  You can even head to their website to download discussion questions to go along with the video and a fun coloring page.

Activity Suggestion from Church Magazines

  • For Doctrine and Covenants 88

    • Sing “Home Can Be a Heaven on Earth” (Hymns, no. 298).

    • Heavenly Father wants us to “establish … a house of God” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:119). He wants us to make our homes holy places like the temple, where we can feel the Holy Ghost.

    • Read “The Important Guest” on page 4. Then build a house out of blocks, sticks, or other items you can find. Every time you add a piece to the house, say something you can do to make your home a place where the Holy Ghost feels welcome.

  • For Doctrine and Covenants 88: Help your littles ones say, “Heavenly Father wants me to learn.” Talk about good things we learn at church and school. Have your little ones draw something they have learned.

Activity Suggestions From Come Follow Me:

    • To inspire your family to make your home like the description in verse 119, try something like this: Write phrases from this verse on strips of paper, and use them to cover a picture of the temple. Read Doctrine and Covenants 88:119 together, and let family members remove each strip of paper as they hear the corresponding phrase in the verse. What can we do to make our home a “house of God”?

    • Ask a child to hold a picture of Jesus at the front of the room as the other children stand at the back of the room. Invite the children to take a step forward each time you say something we can do to come closer to the Savior and take a step backward each time you say something that distances us from the Savior. Bear your testimony that when we try to get closer to the Lord, He comes closer to us.

    • Invite the children to choose seven words that describe their home or another home they’ve visited. Then ask them to read Doctrine and Covenants 88:119 and find the seven words the Lord uses to describe His house. Help the children think of ways they can make their homes a “house of God.”

Watch or Listen To:

The church recently released, “Saints,” A New Narrative approach to church history. It. Is. WONDERFUL. This gives such depth and understanding to the early saints. Historians did a remarkable job marrying facts, conversations, and primary sources with the art of storytelling. Every conversation read, or detail noted, comes from a primary account. Saints is also intended to be read and comprehended at an 8th-grade reading level making it accessible to nearly every Latter-Day Saint. Please add this to your study this year!

…I am SO EXCITED to share the following videos with you! In a nutshell, they are a short introduction and overview of the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants. You get a brief, historically accurate backstory to the section, as well as a quick look at what it contains. In other words, this is the PERFECT support to add to your family’s study!

These videos are put together by Doctrine and Covenants Central, like Book of Mormon Central. Their vision is to “build enduring faith in Jesus Christ by making the Doctrine and Covenants accessible, comprehensible, and defensible to people everywhere.”

I remember first hearing about their vision during a Fair Mormon Conference a few years ago when this vision was still just a vision, tears filled my eyes and my heart swelled at the thought of how needed and necessary their vision and efforts are, especially today. I wish I could put into words how grateful I am to those that share their talents so freely. If you really want to dive in deep to each section, consider visiting their website and looking up the section you would like to study, or downloading their FREE Scripture Study App, (Scripture Plus)
