Week 31 COME FOLLOW ME: Doctrine and Covenants – TEACHING IDEAS & RESOURCES | D&C Sections 84

Questions to Ponder:

When I first began my individual study… these questions threw me off. Simply because many of these questions required so much depth and individual reflection in order to answer honestly. My first approach to Come Follow Me was to get in, get out, get it done, check it off. These questions simply didn’t allow me to do so. In fact, I felt a little sick when I would read a question like, “How does the spirit speak to you?” and I wouldn’t know the answer right away. After a time, and pondering on that specific question I realized IT’S OKAY. In fact, I think these questions were meant to be set aside, thought about, and pondered. When we try and come up with the quick easy, obvious, answer, we are depriving ourselves of an opportunity to reflect, ponder, pray, and RECEIVE REVELATION. Is this not the whole reason for Come Follow Me? Are we not trying to finetune and recognize how we, and how to receive personal revelation. So each week I will list out some of the questions issued in Come Follow Me. Maybe you pick to ponder about all of them, maybe you pick just one. Whatever you do, ponder on this for the ENTIRE week. Pray about it, discuss it with loved ones, then at the start of the new week, take the time to write down your impressions or thoughts, share them with your family, testify of powerful insights. Each Come Follow Me Lesson asks important and reflective questions.

  • When you think of the word priesthood, what comes to mind?

    • How often do you think about the priesthood and its influence on your everyday life?
    • After pondering these questions, study Doctrine and Covenants 84:1–5, 17–28, and consider what the Lord wants you to know about His priesthood power.
    • How could you use these verses to describe the priesthood to someone and explain its purposes?
  • You might also ponder the priesthood ordinances you have participated in.
    • How have you seen “the power of godliness” (verse 20) manifest in them?
    • Consider what the Lord wants you to do to receive more of His power into your life.
  • As you study Doctrine and Covenants 84:31–42, look for the words “obtain” and “receive.” Ponder what they might mean in this context.
    • How are you “receiv[ing]” the Lord and His servants?
  • You could also note promises in these verses associated with the oath and covenant of the priesthood, which God “cannot break” (verse 40).
    • What do you find that inspires you to be more faithful in receiving the Father, His servants, and His priesthood power?
  • What truths do you find in Doctrine and Covenants 84:43–58 that help you understand why you need to consistently study the word of God?
    • Note the contrast between light and darkness in these verses; how has your “diligent heed to the words of eternal life” brought light, truth, and “the Spirit of Jesus Christ” into your life? (verses 43, 45).
  • As you read these verses, you could identify ways the Lord said He would support His Apostles and missionaries.
    • How might these promises apply to the work He has asked you to do? For example, how have the promises in verse 88 been fulfilled in your life?
  • Why is it important that we can trace priesthood authority in the Church today back to the authority of Jesus Christ? To request a priesthood line of authority, send an email to [email protected].
  • When has your family experienced “the power of godliness” being manifested through an ordinance such as baptism or the sacrament? Perhaps you can talk about how these ordinances bring God’s power into our lives. You could also display a picture of a temple and discuss how the ordinances of the temple give us additional power to become like the Savior.
  • What do we learn about Jesus Christ from the “new song” (verse 98) in these verses?
    • What can we do in our day to help bring about the conditions described in this song?
  • How is our family “edified together” by the gifts and efforts of “every member”? (verse 110).

Lesson:

I HAD to share these videos with you…

EVERY member can learn SO MUCH.

Please take the time to watch both parts. I am currently RE-watching.

Do you wonder how both women and men hold priesthood authority and priesthood power? Dr. Barbara Morgan Gardner returns to teach about how women and men have priesthood authority, responsibility, and duties. We learn how the early Saints were being prepared for temple covenants and learn the difference between how the priesthood operates within and without the family structure.

Are both men and women instructed to study Doctrine and Covenants, Section 84? Dr. Gardner teaches how the Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood involves responsibilities and blessings that don’t vary for men and women and we are reminded, as the early Saints were, that we are willing to take upon ourselves the name of Christ at baptism and we take upon ourselves His name in the temple and men and women both can receive all the blessings our Heavenly Parents have for their children.

President Joseph Fielding Smith (1876–1972) instructed: “The blessings of the priesthood are not confined to men alone. These blessings are also poured out upon … all the faithful women of the Church. … The Lord offers to his daughters every spiritual gift and blessing that can be obtained by his sons.”9

With young children, I understand the STRUGGLE and the attention span you are dealing with. Below are some of my favorite videos or audio recordings|podcasts you can listen to and watch with your children.  Many of these are PERFECT for when everyone is strapped in the car seat. My 5-year-old now requests many of these over the radio. Activity Suggestion from Church Magazines

  • For Doctrine and Covenants 84: Show a picture of someone getting baptized or receiving a blessing. Talk about the good feelings these special acts bring. Help your little ones say, “I am blessed by the priesthood.”
  • Paper Lilies

    For Doctrine and Covenants 84

    • Sing “I Feel My Savior’s Love” (Children’s Songbook, 74–75).

    • Jesus said to “consider the lilies of the field” (Doctrine and Covenants 84:82). If Heavenly Father takes care of the flowers, we can trust that He will take care of us! (See Doctrine and Covenants 84:83–85.)

    • Make a paper lily to remind you of Heavenly Father’s love and care. Trace your hand on a piece of paper and cut it out. Roll the hand shape into a cone. Then roll each “finger” around a pencil to curl the paper outward for the petals. If you want, you can tape your flower to a stick to make a stem.

Activity Suggestions From Come Follow Me:

  • You could prepare a meal or a treat together and label each ingredient with a word or phrase from verse 44. Why is it important that we include every ingredient? Why is it important to live by every word of God?
  • Create a puzzle out of a picture of a temple. Read with the children Doctrine and Covenants 84:5, and ask them to listen for what the Lord commanded the Saints to build. Give each child a piece of the puzzle, and ask them to share something they can do to prepare to enter the temple:

Check out this post to create your own Puzzle

  • Bring cups or other similar containers to class. Write on slips of paper ways the children can be missionaries now, and place each slip of paper in a cup. Group the cups close together, open end up, on the floor. Invite the children to take turns tossing a small object into one of the cups and then acting out what is on the paper in that cup. How can Heavenly Father help us when we share the gospel with others, even when it may be hard or we feel nervous?

Watch or Listen To:

The church recently released, “Saints,” A New Narrative approach to church history. It. Is. WONDERFUL. This gives such depth and understanding to the early saints. Historians did a remarkable job marrying facts, conversations, and primary sources with the art of storytelling. Every conversation read, or detail noted, comes from a primary account. Saints is also intended to be read and comprehended at an 8th-grade reading level making it accessible to nearly every Latter-Day Saint. Please add this to your study this year!

…I am SO EXCITED to share the following videos with you! In a nutshell, they are a short introduction and overview of the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants. You get a brief, historically accurate backstory to the section, as well as a quick look at what it contains. In other words, this is the PERFECT support to add to your family’s study!

These videos are put together by Doctrine and Covenants Central, like Book of Mormon Central. Their vision is to “build enduring faith in Jesus Christ by making the Doctrine and Covenants accessible, comprehensible, and defensible to people everywhere.”

I remember first hearing about their vision during a Fair Mormon Conference a few years ago when this vision was still just a vision, tears filled my eyes and my heart swelled at the thought of how needed and necessary their vision and efforts are, especially today. I wish I could put into words how grateful I am to those that share their talents so freely. If you really want to dive in deep to each section, consider visiting their website and looking up the section you would like to study, or downloading their FREE Scripture Study App, (Scripture Plus)

  • Another GREAT Resource is Revelations in Context: This is another book released by the church,  its purpose is to give you the behind the scene details to the  Section of the revelation given.  What prompted the question, what was going on…etc.
  • “The Doctrine and Covenants is a book of answers to prayers: many of the sacred revelations in this book came in response to questions. So it’s appropriate to begin studying the Doctrine and Covenants by considering the question that began the latter-day outpouring of revelation.” This book will help provide that background…
