Week 13 COME FOLLOW ME: Doctrine and Covenants – TEACHING IDEAS & RESOURCES | D&C Sections 29

Questions to Ponder:

Ponder the counsel the Lord gave early Church members to help them strengthen the Church. What do you feel the Lord wants you to do to participate in this effort? As you read the first 36 verses of this revelation, ask yourself why that might be. You might also make a list of the gospel truths you find. Here are some examples: As you read, Doctrine and Covenants 20 – 22 ponder how other people’s opinions may be influencing you. You may also note that in addition to rebuking Joseph Smith, the Lord spoke words of mercy. So each week I will list out some of the questions issued in Come Follow Me. Maybe you pick to ponder about all of them, maybe you pick just one. Whatever you do, ponder on this for the ENTIRE week. Pray about it, discuss it with loved ones, then at the start of the new week, take the time to write down your impressions or thoughts, share them with your family, testify of powerful insights. Each Come Follow Me Lesson asks important and reflective questions. When I first began my individual study… these questions threw me off. Simply because many of these questions required so much depth and individual reflection in order to answer honestly. My first approach to Come Follow Me was to get in, get out, get it done, check it off. These questions simply didn’t allow me to do so. In fact, I felt a little sick when I would read a question like, “How does the spirit speak to you?” and I wouldn’t know the answer right away. After a time, and pondering on that specific question I realized IT’S OKAY. In fact, I think these questions were meant to be set aside, thought about, and pondered. When we try and come up with the quick easy, obvious, answer, we are depriving ourselves of an opportunity to reflect, ponder, pray, and RECEIVE REVELATION. Is this not the whole reason for Come Follow Me? Are we not trying to finetune and recognize how we, and how to receive personal revelation.

  • What new insights did you gain? How would your life be different if you didn’t know about these truths?
  • Jesus Christ speaks of gathering His people “as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings” (Doctrine and Covenants 29:2). What does this image teach you about the Savior’s desire to gather you?
  • In our day, gathering to Zion means uniting in stakes of Zion around the world. How does gathering as Saints help us “be prepared in all things” for the tribulations that will come before the Savior’s Second Coming?
  • In what sense are all commandments spiritual?

    • What does knowing that all commandments are spiritual teach you about the purpose of commandments? You might list a few commandments and consider the spiritual principles related to each one.

    • What might change if you looked for spiritual meaning or purpose in your everyday tasks, even those that seem temporal or mundane?

  • This revelation opens with the Lord introducing Himself as our Redeemer, who has “atoned for [our] sins” (verse 1). The revelation goes on to explain some of the reasons we need a Redeemer. Consider how you would use verses 36–50 to explain why we need redemption through the Savior Jesus Christ. In many faith traditions, the Fall is seen as a tragedy;
    • What do you find in these verses that teaches the positive results of the Fall?
  • Write down what you learn. Why are we thankful to know about the plan of salvation?
    • How does knowing about it influence our everyday lives?
  • What does it mean to be gathered by the Savior?
    • How can we help Him gather the elect?
  • What do we learn about the Savior in these verses that helps us “lift up [our] hearts and be glad”? (verse 5). The video “We Can Find Happiness” (ChurchofJesusChrist.org) could help you discuss how knowing about the plan of salvation has brought your family happiness. (Video posted below)
  •  Why does the Lord want us to read the scriptures as a family?
    • What spiritual benefits have we seen from keeping the commandments?

Lesson:

Easter is SO CLOSE! I wanted to remind you about one of my favorite activities that’s FREE to members of On Lemon Lane.

Countdown to Easter. The activity is an 8-day countdown that starts the Sunday before Easter and follows the Holy Week procession. The fun part about this countdown is you can choose how to use it. Cut the strips and hide them in eggs to be found throughout the week, or create a paperchain like the one used to prepare for General Conference.

I’ve prepared 3 different templates for you to pick from, each one is editable and can be customized for personal use with your own traditions, and activities. Like the General Conference Countdown, these make great activity handouts for Primary, Ministering, Activity Days, Young Men\Young Women…etc. Comment below how you plan to use them!

Easter Countdown: Free Download 3 Different Versions

  1. Version 1 Toddlers | Young Children: Created with toddlers and young children in mind. Each QR code links you to a video appropriate and engaging for this age group. Kids will better understand the WHY of Easter and even begin to learn more about Holy Week. See below for the list of videos included in this countdown.
  2. Version 2: Families | Youth: This countdown was created with youth and families in mind. Each day gives you a handful of scriptures to read. These scriptures follow the chronology of Holy Week, starting with Palm Sunday. This countdown also includes a QR code that will link you to a video focused on our Savior Jesus Christ appropriate for Easter Sunday. I put a lot of thought and effort into finding videos that I felt would be impactful. See below for a list of videos included.
  3. Version 3: Families | Youth: This countdown is completely focused on the scriptures. Meaning you will read the same scriptures that are on version 2 that follow Holy Week. This time, however, the videos the QR code will link you to will be videos that illustrate the scriptures you’ve just read. This is a great way to bring the passages to life, and better understand their meaning. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has done a wonderful job creating these New Testament videos, everyone is sure to enjoy, and even more… feel something.

“Just as a man does not really desire food until he is hungry, so he does not desire the salvation of Christ until he knows why he needs Christ.

No one adequately and properly knows why he needs Christ until he understands and accepts the doctrine of the Fall and its effect upon all mankind. And no other book in the world explains this vital doctrine nearly as well as the Book of Mormon.”

Ezra Taft Benson

For this week’s Come Follow Me, I was really struck by the @FollowHimPodcast. I hope you make the time to listen to at least the last 10 minutes of part 1. Their discussion on temporal and spiritual matters really stood out to me, I think I’ve listened to that portion 3 times since compiling this blog post! The quote I chose to use also came from this week’s Follow Him Podcast, and I knew I had to share it. Make sure to catch the podcast, (Posted Below!)

Teaching Ideas for Toddlers & Young Children

Watch or Listen To:

With young children, I understand the STRUGGLE and the attention span you are dealing with. Below are some of my favorite videos or audio recordings|podcasts you can listen to and watch with your children.  Many of these are PERFECT for when everyone is strapped in the car seat. My 5-year-old now requests many of these over the radio. This allows us to listen, review and discuss together, and listen again throughout the week.  Many of the videos I share can be found on the Saint’s Radio Channel App. (Formerly Mormon Channel App, If you don’t already have this, DOWNLOAD NOW.)

I am absolutely LOVING the YouTube Channel, Latter Day Kids. Each week they put out a beautifully illustrated video meant for young children to be used in conjunction with the Come Follow Me Lessons. This week’s video is all about All Things Denoting there is a God! You can even head to their website to download discussion questions to go along with the video and a fun coloring page.

Activity Suggestions From Come Follow Me:

  • Possible Activities

    • After reading Doctrine and Covenants 29:1–2, act out the analogy of Christ gathering His people “as a hen gathereth her chickens.” One child could pretend to be the hen and choose a corner of the room to stand in. When he or she “clucks,” have all the children gather around him or her. Children could take turns being the hen. Hold up a picture of the Savior and invite the children to gather to Him. Share with the children how Jesus helps us when we gather to Him.
    • Agency. Help the children understand that Heavenly Father has given us the gift of agency—the freedom to choose—and holds us accountable for our choices (see Doctrine and Covenants 29:39–40). Create two signs for each child: one that represents making a good choice (for example, a smiling face) and one that represents making a bad choice (for example, a frowning face). Share examples of good choices and bad choices, and ask the children to raise the correct sign. Ask the children to share blessings that come when we follow Jesus Christ. Why does Heavenly Father let us make our own choices?
    • The commandments. Invite the children to make a list on the board of some of the commandments. (For examples, they could search Exodus 20:3–17 and Gospel Art Book, nos. 103–15.) Why does Heavenly Father give us commandments? What do we learn from Doctrine and Covenants 29:35 about Heavenly Father’s commandments?

    • The Atonement of Jesus Christ. Help the children see that Heavenly Father prepared a way for us to be forgiven when we make wrong choices. Ask each child to read one of the verses in Doctrine and Covenants 29:1, 42–43 and share what it teaches about the Savior’s Atonement. Find a creative way to invite the children to share what they found, like in order of their birthdays, or shortest to tallest, and so on.

Teaching Ideas for Families

Watch or Listen To:

The church recently released, “Saints,” A New Narrative approach to church history. It. Is. WONDERFUL. This gives such depth and understanding to the early saints. Historians did a remarkable job marrying facts, conversations, and primary sources with the art of storytelling. Every conversation read, or detail noted, comes from a primary account. Saints is also intended to be read and comprehended at an 8th-grade reading level making it accessible to nearly every Latter-Day Saint. Please add this to your study this year!

…I am SO EXCITED to share the following videos with you! In a nutshell, they are a short introduction and overview of the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants. You get a brief, historically accurate backstory to the section, as well as a quick look at what it contains. In other words, this is the PERFECT support to add to your family’s study!

These videos are put together by Doctrine and Covenants Central, like Book of Mormon Central. Their vision is to “build enduring faith in Jesus Christ by making the Doctrine and Covenants accessible, comprehensible, and defensible to people everywhere.”

I remember first hearing about their vision during a Fair Mormon Conference a few years ago when this vision was still just a vision, tears filled my eyes and my heart swelled at the thought of how needed and necessary their vision and efforts are, especially today. I wish I could put into words how grateful I am to those that share their talents so freely. If you really want to dive in deep to each section, consider visiting their website and looking up the section you would like to study, or downloading their FREE Scripture Study App, (Scripture Plus)

  • Another GREAT Resource is Revelations in Context: This is another book released by the church,  its purpose is to give you the behind the scene details to the  Section of the revelation given.  What prompted the question, what was going on…etc.
  • “The Doctrine and Covenants is a book of answers to prayers: many of the sacred revelations in this book came in response to questions. So it’s appropriate to begin studying the Doctrine and Covenants by considering the question that began the latter-day outpouring of revelation.” This book will help provide that background…
