Come Follow Me: Book of Mormon, Teaching Ideas and Free Resources

Heleman 13-16

QUESTIONS TO PONDER:

Each Come Follow Me Lesson asks important and reflective questions. When I first began my individual study these questions threw me off. Simply because many of these questions required so much depth and individual reflection in order to answer honestly. My first approach to come follow me was to get in, get out, get it done, check it off. These questions simply didn’t allow me to do so. In fact, I felt a little sick when I would read a question like, “How does the spirit speak to you?” and I wouldn’t know the answer right away. After a time, and pondering on that specific question I realized IT’S OKAY. In fact, I think these questions were meant to be set aside, thought about, and pondered. When we try and come up with the quick easy, obvious, answer, we are depriving ourselves of an opportunity to reflect, ponder, pray, and RECEIVE REVELATION. Is this not the whole reason for Come Follow Me? Are we not trying to finetune and recognize how we, and how to receive personal revelation.

So each week I will list out some of the questions issued in Come Follow Me. Maybe you pick to ponder about all of them, maybe you pick just one. Whatever you do, ponder on this for the ENTIRE week. Pray about it, discuss it with loved ones, then at the start of the new week, take the time to write down your impressions or thoughts, share them with your family, testify of powerful insights.

  • As you study and ponder Helaman 13, you could mark the many warnings that Samuel gave. For example, what did he teach about repentance?
    • about humility and wealth?
    • How might these warnings apply to you?
    • What warnings have modern prophets given recently, and what do you feel you should do about those warnings?
  • As you study Helaman 14, note the signs of the Savior’s birth in verses 1–8 and the signs of His death in verses 20–28. Why do you think these signs would be effective ways to signify the birth and death of Jesus Christ?
  • Can you think of any signs the Lord has given to help you believe in Him? For instance, prophets have predicted signs that will appear before the Savior’s Second Coming (see “Signs of the Times,”
    • Have any of these signs been fulfilled in our day? Other signs that lead to faith in Jesus Christ may be more personal and less dramatic. Take a moment to ponder ways you have witnessed His hand in your life.
  • What caution is given about signs in Helaman 16:13–23?
    • How can you avoid the attitude of the people described in these verses?
  • (“The Prophet of God,”). How do the words and actions of the Nephites in Helaman 16 confirm what Elder Andersen taught?
    • What personal commitments do you feel you should make regarding the Lord’s prophets and their messages?
  • The idea that happiness can be found “in doing iniquity” is common in our day. In what ways has living the gospel brought us true happiness?
  • How does God’s correction show His love for us? Invite family members to humbly ask the Lord what they can do to improve.
  • What do we learn about conversion from the Lamanites described in these verses? How can we follow their example?

Lesson:

“As a prophet reveals the truth it divides the people. The honest in heart heed his words, but the unrighteous either ignore the prophet or fight him. When the prophet points out the sins of the world, the worldly either want to close the mouth of the prophet or else act as if the prophet didn’t exist, rather than repent of their sins. Popularity is never a test of truth. Many a prophet has been killed or cast out. As we come closer to the Lord’s second coming, you can expect that as the people of the world become more wicked, the prophet will be less popular with them”

President Ezra Taft Benson

Friends! I hope this you have had a great week and that you are excited to jump into this week’s Come Follow Me Reading. As would be expected with Samuel the Lamanite or any other iconic scripture story, this week is PACKED with wonderful *FREE materials to add to your study. I came across a few ideas and created a few activities for you to try as well!

The first activity is a chronological order sort and coloring page. To complete this activity simply read through Heleman chapter 13 1-11, Heleman 14, and Heleman 16: 1-8. As you read you will sort the events listed by writing numbers 1-10 in the column to show the order the events transpired in.

The text is editable so you can add a quote or note to customize this activity to your needs.

The second activity idea came from Come Follow Me:

“Hide pictures around the room that represent the signs that Samuel prophesied of in Helaman 14:2–7 and 20–25. Read a phrase that describes one of the signs, and ask the children to find the picture of that sign. Explain that these signs helped the Nephites know about Jesus Christ. Testify that, like Samuel, all prophets testify of Jesus Christ.”

Based on this suggestion I created a fun activity that includes some of the signs that Samuel the Lamanite mentions. This Free Activity includes 2 pages. One with the symbols that are a little larger, perfect for printing and hiding around the room.

The second page is more of a key. It will show the symbol for the sign, the scripture where the sign is mentioned, and even the scripture where the sign is fulfilled! This activity is based on the FARM chart.

There’s a few options for this activity. You would follow the Come Follow Me suggestion directly, or you could hide the signs around the room and allow students to find the symbols, read the scripture, decide which symbol represents what sign…etc.

A great follow up activity | discussion would be to talk about how like the signs of Christ’s birth and death, we have also been given signs for when he comes again. Elder Oaks has a great talk I’ve included on the second coming. I’ve also included a great infographic that ties these two ideas together really nicely!

Teaching Ideas for Toddlers & Young Children

Watch or Listen To:

With a 2-year-old and 4-year-old, I understand the STRUGGLE and the attention span you are dealing with. Below are some of my favorite videos or audio recordings|podcasts you can listen to and watch with your children. My favorites right now are the Book of Mormon Story videos.**Different from the newly released B.O.M. videos. These are illustrated and READ stories to your children. THESE are PERFECT for when everyone is strapped in the car seat. My 4-year-old now requests these over the radio. Each segment is only 2-4 minutes long. This allows us to listen, review and discuss together, and listen again throughout the week.  Many of the videos I share can be found on the Saint’s Radio Channel App. (Formerly Mormon Channel App, If you don’t already have this, DOWNLOAD NOW.)

I am absolutely LOVING the YouTube Channel, Latter Day Kids. Each week they put out a beautifully illustrated video meant for young children to be used in conjunction with the Come Follow Me Lessons. This week’s video is all about All Things Denoting there is a God! You can even head to their website to download discussion questions to go along with the video and a fun coloring page.

Activity Suggestions from the Friend or the Come Follow Me Manual:

  • Would your family enjoy acting out the story of Samuel the Lamanite? After reading the account, maybe family members could take turns standing on a chair and reading some of Samuel’s prophecies while other family members pretend to shoot arrows or throw stones. This could help your family understand how Samuel and the Nephites may have felt. Young children might also enjoy drawing pictures of the story. How can we be like Samuel and share the gospel with others despite our fears?
  • Teach the children that while we speak to each other using words, the Holy Ghost can communicate through feelings in our hearts. Invite them to hold their hands over their hearts each time you read the word “heart” in Helaman 13:2–5. Help them decorate heart-shaped pieces of paper that say, “The Spirit speaks to me in my heart.”
  • Hide pictures around the room that represent the signs that Samuel prophesied of in Helaman 14:2–7 and 20–25. Read a phrase that describes one of the signs, and ask the children to find the picture of that sign. Explain that these signs helped the Nephites know about Jesus Christ. Testify that, like Samuel, all prophets testify of Jesus Christ.
  • Help the children build a small wall with blocks or books. Using a small toy or doll to represent Samuel, let the children take turns helping “Samuel” climb the wall to teach the people about Jesus Christ. (See also this week’s activity page.) Share phrases from Helaman 16:1 and 5 to explain that some people believed Samuel and were baptized. Use phrases from Helaman 16:2 and 6 to show that others did not believe and were angry with Samuel. Testify that people who follow the prophet are blessed.
  • Display a picture of the Savior, and ask a child to represent the prophet and lead the other children around the room while they sing a few verses of “Follow the Prophet” (Children’s Songbook, 110–11) or another song about prophets. Then ask the child representing the prophet to lead the children to the picture of the Savior. Testify that if we follow the prophet, he will lead us to Jesus Christ. Share some things our prophet has taught about Jesus recently. How can we follow his counsel?
  • Read Helaman 14:11–12 together. Show your little ones a picture of Samuel standing on the wall and teaching people about Jesus. (You could use page FJ4 or the cover.) Then help them take turns standing on a chair or couch—like Samuel on the wall—and saying simple sentences about Jesus, like, “Jesus was born in Bethlehem,” “Jesus is the Son of God,” and “Jesus loves me.”

Activity Suggestion from Come Follow Me:

  • Invite half of the children to read Helaman 14:2–6 and draw pictures of the signs of Jesus’s birth. Invite the other half of the class to read Helaman 14:20–28 and draw pictures of the signs of Jesus’s death. Then ask each group to share what they drew. Read together Helaman 14:11–12, and ask the children to listen for why Samuel prophesied about these signs. How do we learn about Jesus Christ today?

Activity Suggestion from the Ensign:

  • Read Helaman 16:1–3 together. Those who believed Samuel “went forth” to do what he taught. Talk about how we should follow our Church leaders today.

    1. Invite each family member to find a quote from general conference. (Perhaps browse “Inspirational Picture Quotes” at ChurchofJesusChrist.org/media-library/images.)

    2. Take turns standing on a chair or stool, like Samuel on the wall, and reading these quotes to the group.

    3. After each quote, talk about what your family can do to “go forth” and do what was taught.

Discussion: What could we do to get ready for general conference next month? What would help us listen to and act on the teachings of our Church leaders?
