Come Follow Me: Book of Mormon, Teaching Ideas and Free Resources

ALMA 23 – 29

QUESTIONS TO PONDER:

Each Come Follow Me Lesson asks important and reflective questions. When I first began my individual study these questions threw me off. Simply because many of these questions required so much depth and individual reflection in order to answer honestly. My first approach to come follow me was to get in, get out, get it done, check it off. These questions simply didn’t allow me to do so. In fact, I felt a little sick when I would read a question like, “How does the spirit speak to you?” and I wouldn’t know the answer right away. After a time, and pondering on that specific question I realized IT’S OKAY. In fact, I think these questions were meant to be set aside, thought about, and pondered. When we try and come up with the quick easy, obvious, answer, we are depriving ourselves of an opportunity to reflect, ponder, pray, and RECEIVE REVELATION. Is this not the whole reason for Come Follow Me? Are we not trying to finetune and recognize how we, and how to receive personal revelation.

So each week I will list out some of the questions issued in Come Follow Me. Maybe you pick to ponder about all of them, maybe you pick just one. Whatever you do, ponder on this for the ENTIRE week. Pray about it, discuss it with loved ones, then at the start of the new week, take the time to write down your impressions or thoughts, share them with your family, testify of powerful insights.

    • How can you ensure that the word of God has “no obstruction” in your life or in your family?
    • As you ponder the changes in the Anti-Nephi-Lehies, consider how your own conversion to Christ is changing you.
      • What do you feel you still need to change so that the gospel can have greater power in your life?
    • What do you find in Alma 24:7–19 and 26:17–22 that helps you understand His mercy?
      • As you read, you might think about these things: the ways you have been invited to repent, your experiences with repentance, how you have tried to avoid sinning again, and the blessings that have come to you through repentance.
      • When you read the verses in this way, what do you learn about God’s mercy in your life?
    • Consider reading Alma 26 and 29 and comparing them. What similarities do you notice?
      • What words and phrases are repeated?
      • What can you learn from Ammon and Alma about how to find true joy in spite of your challenges?
    • Why did the Anti-Nephi-Lehies bury their weapons “deep in the earth”?
    • What did the Anti-Nephi-Lehies do to repent of their sins?
      • How did the Lord help them repent?
      • What can we learn from this example?
    • What have we seen that testifies of the truth of Mormon’s declaration: “Thus we see that the Lord worketh in many ways to the salvation of his people”? (Alma 24:27).
    • How were Ammon and Alma instruments in God’s hands? Consider looking at tools or instruments in your home and discussing how they are each helpful to your family.
      • How does this help us understand how we can each be “an instrument in the hands of God”?

Lesson:

I love the lesson from Come Follow Me for Children this week. Wonderful activity suggestions were made but this one stuck out to me!

  • Read with the children Alma 24:16–19, and discuss what the Anti-Nephi-Lehies did to show God they had repented. What did they covenant not to do? Explain that the covenants we make are “a testimony to God” that we want to follow God’s commandments (verse 18). What covenants have the children made?

  • Invite the children to draw pictures of the Anti-Nephi-Lehies’ weapons. Then invite them to write, on the back of the weapons, something they feel they should change in order to follow Jesus Christ more fully. Let them pretend to bury their weapons and make a plan to act on what they wrote.

Print out the Free Weapon Download above and have a discussion of the types of things that we can bury that are affecting our lives. Discuss the difference between burying the weapons and setting them aside. How does that apply to our own commitment?

Next, write on the back of the weapon and find a place to bury the papers. While thinking of this activity I was reminded of Elder Rendlund’s talk, “Unwavering Commitment to Jesus Christ.” Consider watching this with your family or students!

Teaching Ideas for Toddlers & Young Children

Watch or Listen To:

With a 2-year-old and 4-year-old, I understand the STRUGGLE and the attention span you are dealing with. Below are some of my favorite videos or audio recordings|podcasts you can listen to and watch with your children. My favorites right now are the Book of Mormon Story videos.**Different from the newly released B.O.M. videos. These are illustrated and READ stories to your children. THESE are PERFECT for when everyone is strapped in the car seat. My 4-year-old now requests these over the radio. Each segment is only 2-4 minutes long. This allows us to listen, review and discuss together, and listen again throughout the week.  Many of the videos I share can be found on the Saint’s Radio Channel App. (Formerly Mormon Channel App, If you don’t already have this, DOWNLOAD NOW.)

I am absolutely LOVING the YouTube Channel, Latter Day Kids. Each week they put out a beautifully illustrated video meant for young children to be used in conjunction with the Come Follow Me Lessons. This week’s video is all about Showing Love through service! You can even head to their website to download discussion questions to go along with the video and a fun coloring page.

Activity

  • (Alma 24:16). Maybe family members would enjoy writing on pieces of paper things they would like to overcome or abandon. They could then dig a hole and bury the papers.
  • How were Ammon and Alma instruments in God’s hands? Consider looking at tools or instruments in your home and discussing how they are each helpful to your family. How does this help us understand how we can each be “an instrument in the hands of God”?
  • Give all the children small rocks, and invite them to write the word covenant on their rock. Explain that a covenant is a promise between Heavenly Father and His children. How do our covenants make us strong or “firm” like a rock? (Alma 24:19). Read together Alma 24:16–25 to learn what covenant the people of Ammon made and how they honored their covenant. Invite the children to take the rocks home as a reminder to keep their covenants.

Activity Suggestion from Ensign: Alma 27:17–1929:13–14 (June 29–July 5)

Joyful Service Charades

Read Alma 27:17–19 and Alma 29:13–14 together, paying special attention to the word joy. Ammon and Alma found great joy in serving other people and the Lord.

  1. Invite one or two people to act out helping someone else—no speaking allowed! Examples could include opening the door for someone, helping a person in their yard, helping fix dinner, and so on.

  2. While the scene is being acted out, other family members guess what the service is.

  3. Take turns until everyone has had a chance to act.

Discussion: Why is it important to help other people? When have you felt joy after helping someone? What could our family do to help someone this week?
