Week 25 COME FOLLOW ME: Doctrine and Covenants – TEACHING IDEAS & RESOURCES | D&C Sections 64-66

Questions to Ponder:

When I first began my individual study… these questions threw me off. Simply because many of these questions required so much depth and individual reflection in order to answer honestly. My first approach to Come Follow Me was to get in, get out, get it done, check it off. These questions simply didn’t allow me to do so. In fact, I felt a little sick when I would read a question like, “How does the spirit speak to you?” and I wouldn’t know the answer right away. After a time, and pondering on that specific question I realized IT’S OKAY. In fact, I think these questions were meant to be set aside, thought about, and pondered. When we try and come up with the quick easy, obvious, answer, we are depriving ourselves of an opportunity to reflect, ponder, pray, and RECEIVE REVELATION. Is this not the whole reason for Come Follow Me? Are we not trying to finetune and recognize how we, and how to receive personal revelation. So each week I will list out some of the questions issued in Come Follow Me. Maybe you pick to ponder about all of them, maybe you pick just one. Whatever you do, ponder on this for the ENTIRE week. Pray about it, discuss it with loved ones, then at the start of the new week, take the time to write down your impressions or thoughts, share them with your family, testify of powerful insights. Each Come Follow Me Lesson asks important and reflective questions.

• As you read Doctrine and Covenants 64:1–11, think about a time when the Lord forgave you. You might also think about someone you need to forgive.
  • How does the Savior’s compassion affect your feelings about yourself and about others?
  • Why do you think the Lord commands us “to forgive all”? (verse 10).
  • If you struggle to forgive, consider what the following resources teach about how the Savior can help: Jeffrey R. Holland, “The Ministry of Reconciliation,” Ensign or Liahona,

• Have you ever felt “weary” with all the “well-doing” you’re trying to accomplish? Look for the Lord’s message to you in Doctrine and Covenants 64:31–34.
• What does it mean to give your “heart and a willing mind” to God? (verse 34). Doctrine and Covenants 64:41–43
• How has Zion—or the Lord’s Church—been like an ensign to you? Consider these other examples of things that are held up, like an ensign, to bless the people: Numbers 21:6–9; Matthew 5:14–16; Alma 46:11–20.
  • What do these verses teach you about how you can help the Church be an ensign where you live?
• What similarities do you see between what John the Baptist did (see Matthew 3:1–12) and what the Lord wants us to do today?
  • What do you find in this revelation that inspires you to help fulfill the prophecies it contains? Ponder ways you can “make known [God’s] wonderful works among the people”
• How has the Lord revealed that He knows you? If you have a patriarchal blessing, consider studying it. As you do, what does the Holy Ghost help you understand about God’s will for you?
• Family relationships provide many opportunities to learn to forgive. Maybe family members could talk about how forgiving each other has blessed your family. How has the Savior helped us forgive each other?
  • How are we “afflicted” (verse 8) when we don’t forgive others?
• What does Heavenly Father want your family to do to bring about His “great work”?
  • Maybe it’s going to the temple, sharing the gospel with a neighbor, or overcoming contention.
• How will you teach the importance of repenting?
• How can your family follow the Lord’s counsel to “seek not to be cumbered,” or burdened with many things to do?

 

Lesson:

I’ve got a fun FREE Download for you this week! I wanted to come up with an activity that could illustrate the idea of working on something piece by piece that leads to a beautiful BIG picture. This suggestion came from Come Follow Me this week:

• What does Heavenly Father want your family to do to bring about His “great work”? Maybe it’s going to the temple, sharing the gospel with a neighbor, or overcoming contention. Perhaps each family member could collect small objects, like rocks or buttons or puzzle pieces, and use them to represent “small things” we can do every day to “[lay] the foundation” for God’s great work. As a family, pick one of these small things to work on this week.

• Show the children some things that are made up of many small parts, like a puzzle or a rug. Help them think of other examples. Invite the children to read Doctrine and Covenants 64:33. What does God want us to do to help Him accomplish His “great work”? What are the “small things” we can do that will help accomplish this work?

I thought a complicated, intricate coloring page was the PERFECT activity to go along with this activity. As you color in the page piece by piece, rather as you lay the foundation, it would be good to discuss what each piece represents, or even each color.

Activity Suggestion from Church Magazines:

• Loving Like Jesus

  For Doctrine and Covenants 64–66

  • Sing “Help Me, Dear Father” (Children’s Songbook, 99).

  • Jesus taught that we should forgive everyone (see Doctrine and Covenants 64:9–10). Read the story on page 20 to see how a boy and his mom learned to forgive each other.

  • Now draw a picture of you, your family, and the Savior. Talk about ways you can show love for each other, like Jesus does. You could practice saying sorry and forgiving each other by acting it out.

• For Doctrine and Covenants 64–66: Take turns saying, “I’m sorry” and “I forgive you.” Help your little ones say, “I can forgive.”

Activity Suggestions From Come Follow Me:

• What does Heavenly Father want your family to do to bring about His “great work”? Maybe it’s going to the temple, sharing the gospel with a neighbor, or overcoming contention. Perhaps each family member could collect small objects, like rocks or buttons or puzzle pieces, and use them to represent “small things” we can do every day to “[lay] the foundation” for God’s great work. As a family, pick one of these small things to work on this week.
• How will you teach the importance of repenting? You could serve some food on a plate that is partially clean and read the Lord’s words to William McLellin: “You are clean, but not all.” Then you could clean the plate and share the food while discussing how Jesus Christ makes it possible for us to be spiritually clean.

• Think of an analogy that might help the children understand how we are “afflicted” when we don’t forgive (verse 8). For example, show the children a bag of mud or dirt; ask them to imagine that someone threw mud on them. How might failing to forgive be like saving the mud and always carrying it with us? Why would it be better to throw the mud away? Help the children think of other analogies that teach why it is important to forgive.

• Show the children some things that are made up of many small parts, like a puzzle or a rug. Help them think of other examples. Invite the children to read Doctrine and Covenants 64:33. What does God want us to do to help Him accomplish His “great work”? What are the “small things” we can do that will help accomplish this work?

• Ask the children to complete an action that requires two objects, but give them only one (for example, writing on the chalkboard without chalk or cutting a piece of paper with no scissors). Invite the children to read Doctrine and Covenants 64:34 to find out what two things the Lord asks of us. Why do we need to give both our heart and mind to the Lord? How do we do this?
