Week 24 COME FOLLOW ME: Doctrine and Covenants – TEACHING IDEAS & RESOURCES | D&C Sections 63

Questions to Ponder:

When I first began my individual study… these questions threw me off. Simply because many of these questions required so much depth and individual reflection in order to answer honestly. My first approach to Come Follow Me was to get in, get out, get it done, check it off. These questions simply didn’t allow me to do so. In fact, I felt a little sick when I would read a question like, “How does the spirit speak to you?” and I wouldn’t know the answer right away. After a time, and pondering on that specific question I realized IT’S OKAY. In fact, I think these questions were meant to be set aside, thought about, and pondered. When we try and come up with the quick easy, obvious, answer, we are depriving ourselves of an opportunity to reflect, ponder, pray, and RECEIVE REVELATION. Is this not the whole reason for Come Follow Me? Are we not trying to finetune and recognize how we, and how to receive personal revelation. So each week I will list out some of the questions issued in Come Follow Me. Maybe you pick to ponder about all of them, maybe you pick just one. Whatever you do, ponder on this for the ENTIRE week. Pray about it, discuss it with loved ones, then at the start of the new week, take the time to write down your impressions or thoughts, share them with your family, testify of powerful insights. Each Come Follow Me Lesson asks important and reflective questions.

  • What warnings did the Lord give in Doctrine and Covenants 63:1–6, 32–37 regarding “the wicked and rebellious”?
    • How are such warnings evidence of God’s love?
  • You might also consider why some people receive signs “for the good of men unto [God’s] glory” (verse 12) and others receive them “unto … condemnation” (verse 11). Based on what you’ve read, how do you think the Lord wants you to think and feel about signs?
  • What consequences does the Lord mention in Doctrine and Covenants 63:13–19 that will come to those who do not repent of unchaste thoughts and actions? Note the blessings the Savior promises in verses 20 and 23 to those who are faithful.
    • What blessings have come into your life from obeying the law of chastity?
    • How does the Savior help you remain or become pure?
  • What spiritual and temporal direction is the Lord giving you?
  • Maybe your family members could talk about miracles that have strengthened their faith, including experiences from your family or your family history.
    • How did they exercise the faith needed to receive these miracles?
    • What does Doctrine and Covenants 63:7–12 teach about the relationship between faith and miracles?
  • How can we protect ourselves from unworthy influences, including pornography? (You can find many helpful resources for families at AddressingPornography.ChurchofJesusChrist.org.)
    • What are the blessings of living the law of chastity?
  • How can you help your family understand how the “mysteries of [the] kingdom,” or truths of the gospel, are like a “well of living water”? For instance, you might travel to a nearby spring or river (or show a video or picture of one).
    • How are gospel truths like water?
  • What warnings do we find in section 63? What are some of the warnings we are hearing from our Church leaders today?
  • How do we treat this item differently than other things that aren’t as valuable? What does Doctrine and Covenants 63:58–64 teach us about what we can do to reverence sacred things?

Lesson:

I loved this activity suggestion from, The Friend! Click on the link below, print, then:

  1. Cut out the cards of sacred things and put them face down.
  2. Take turns picking a card. Tell why the sacred thing on the card is important to you.
  3. For each card, choose one option from the “Ways to Show Respect” and talk about how you can show respect for that sacred thing.

To take the name of the Lord in vain is often thought of only as profanity. Elder James E. Talmage offered a broader definition:

  1. We may take the name of God in vain by profane speech.

  2. We take it in vain when we swear falsely, not being true to our oaths and promises.

  3. We take it in vain in a blasphemous sense when we presume to speak in that name without authority.

  4. And we take his name in vain whenever we wilfully do aught that is in defiance of his commandments, since we have taken his name upon ourselves.” (In Conference Report, Oct. 1931, pp. 53.)

Teaching Ideas for Toddlers & Young Children

Watch or Listen To:

With young children, I understand the STRUGGLE and the attention span you are dealing with. Below are some of my favorite videos or audio recordings|podcasts you can listen to and watch with your children.  Many of these are PERFECT for when everyone is strapped in the car seat. My 5-year-old now requests many of these over the radio. This allows us to listen, review and discuss together, and listen again throughout the week.  Many of the videos I share can be found on the Saint’s Radio Channel App. (Formerly Mormon Channel App, If you don’t already have this, DOWNLOAD NOW.)

I am absolutely LOVING the YouTube Channel, Latter Day Kids. Each week they put out a beautifully illustrated video meant for young children to be used in conjunction with the Come Follow Me Lessons.  You can even head to their website to download discussion questions to go along with the video and a fun coloring page.

Activity Suggestions From Come Follow Me:

  • Show the children a picture of one of your loved ones who has died, and share a story about that person. Read Doctrine and Covenants 63:49 to the children, and testify that one day that person will “rise from the dead” and never die again. Ask the children if they know someone who has died. Testify that we will all be resurrected because of Jesus Christ.

  • Read to the children from Doctrine and Covenants 63:64: “That which cometh from above is sacred.” Ask them to think of an item that is special to them, such as a favorite toy or book. How do they take care of it and protect it? Help them think of things that are special—or sacred—to Heavenly Father. How should we speak of these things? How should we treat them?

  • Invite the children to draw a house sitting on top of a rectangle and another house sitting on the point of a triangle. Tell the children that the houses represent our faith and testimonies. Ask them to read Doctrine and Covenants 63:9–10 and Helaman 5:12. Then have them write in the rectangle what we should build our faith on and in the triangle what we should not build our faith on. Point out that the rectangle provides a solid place to build but the triangle is not safe and secure. Why is it important to build our faith on Jesus Christ rather than on other things?

Activity Suggestion from Church Magazines:

  • For Doctrine and Covenants 63: Help your little ones say, “I can be reverent.” Take turns folding your arms and being quiet for a few moments.
  • I Can Be Reverent

    For Doctrine and Covenants 63

    • Sing “Reverence Is Love” (Children’s Songbook, 31).

    • Jesus Christ taught, “That which cometh from above is sacred, and must be spoken with care” (Doctrine and Covenants 63:64). That means we should show respect and love to Heavenly Father and the things that are important to Him.

    • Turn to page 24 to learn more about showing respect. Then do the activity together.

Teaching Ideas for Families

Watch or Listen To:

The church recently released, “Saints,” A New Narrative approach to church history. It. Is. WONDERFUL. This gives such depth and understanding to the early saints. Historians did a remarkable job marrying facts, conversations, and primary sources with the art of storytelling. Every conversation read, or detail noted, comes from a primary account. Saints is also intended to be read and comprehended at an 8th-grade reading level making it accessible to nearly every Latter-Day Saint. Please add this to your study this year!

…I am SO EXCITED to share the following videos with you! In a nutshell, they are a short introduction and overview of the sections of the Doctrine and Covenants. You get a brief, historically accurate backstory to the section, as well as a quick look at what it contains. In other words, this is the PERFECT support to add to your family’s study!

These videos are put together by Doctrine and Covenants Central, like Book of Mormon Central. Their vision is to “build enduring faith in Jesus Christ by making the Doctrine and Covenants accessible, comprehensible, and defensible to people everywhere.”

I remember first hearing about their vision during a Fair Mormon Conference a few years ago when this vision was still just a vision, tears filled my eyes and my heart swelled at the thought of how needed and necessary their vision and efforts are, especially today. I wish I could put into words how grateful I am to those that share their talents so freely. If you really want to dive in deep to each section, consider visiting their website and looking up the section you would like to study, or downloading their FREE Scripture Study App, (Scripture Plus)

  • Another GREAT Resource is Revelations in Context: This is another book released by the church,  its purpose is to give you the behind the scene details to the  Section of the revelation given.  What prompted the question, what was going on…etc.
  • “The Doctrine and Covenants is a book of answers to prayers: many of the sacred revelations in this book came in response to questions. So it’s appropriate to begin studying the Doctrine and Covenants by considering the question that began the latter-day outpouring of revelation.” This book will help provide that background…
