My 5th grade students love this States and Capital Activity. Students research a state and complete the research page | United States Graphic Organizer. Students identify favorite facts, state symbols like the state flower, they illustrate the state flag, locate the capital…etc. This is perfect for informational text centers or rotations. Students can find the information through websites, flash cards found at both the dollar store and Target, or a children’s Atlas.
I use this activity as bell work for my students. They love it because of the fun facts, and it allows them to color and draw. I love it because technically it provides 50 morning activities for students to complete throughout the year. All I have to do is set out my deck of flash cards and this activity sheet and students take it from there.
When there is time we also enjoy sharing and discussing new and fun things we learned about a State. This is a wonderful tool that allows me to introduce the states in as a gradual process instead of as a test to memorize.
Let me know if you have any questions, or if I can add or change anything. As always I LOVE your feedback.
